Core Content
A Florida Security Officer is a licensed professional who protects people, property, and assets for businesses, government agencies, residential communities, and event venues. The role goes far beyond “standing guard.”
Daily Responsibilities
- Patrol and observation — conducting regular walkthroughs of assigned areas, monitoring for suspicious activity, and reporting hazards
- Access control — managing who enters and exits a building, facility, or event
- Incident response — responding to alarms, fights, medical emergencies, or unauthorized access
- Report writing — documenting incidents, daily activity, and observations accurately and professionally
- Customer service — assisting visitors, employees, and the public in a professional manner
- Deterrence — your visible presence alone prevents many incidents before they start
What a Security Officer Is NOT
It is important to understand that a Florida Class D Security Officer is not a law enforcement officer. You do not have the authority to arrest someone (except under the standard citizen’s arrest law that applies to everyone), you cannot carry a firearm unless you also hold a Class G license, and you must always work within the legal limits of your role.
Learning Outcome
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to clearly describe the core duties of a Florida Security Officer and explain the key legal distinction between a security officer and a law enforcement officer.
