Before you invest time in the 40-hour Class D training program, you need to confirm that you meet Florida’s basic eligibility requirements for a Class D Security Officer License.

Florida Class D Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal alien authorized to work in the United States
  • Background: Must not have been convicted of a felony, or if convicted, civil rights must have been restored for at least 10 years. Certain misdemeanors may also disqualify you.
  • Mental health: Must not have been adjudicated incapacitated or been involuntarily committed to a mental institution without subsequent restoration of capacity
  • Drug use: Must not be an unlawful user of a controlled substance
  • Identity: Must be able to provide a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
  • Fingerprints: Must complete fingerprinting at an FDACS-approved Livescan provider

Disqualifying Records

If you have a criminal record, it does not automatically disqualify you — but certain offenses do. FDACS reviews each application individually. If you are unsure, contact FDACS directly at (800) 435-7352 before enrolling in training.
